Burial in a Mausoleum

When considering a *burial mausoleum* to hold your beloved deceased, carefully consider the design of the *mausoleum burial* to ensure that your love and appreciation show in the structure, art, materials used, and the location of the site. These factors will not only determine the appearance and outward message of the cemetery mausoleum, but the cost. The burial mausoleum can be economical and the mausoleum burial a beautiful statement of love and deep loss at the same time.

A mausoleum burial is similar to any other cemetery burial. The burial in a mausoleum is simply an above-ground process compared to burial in the earth. The interment position of the deceased may be under ground level within the mausoleum, with the structure of the cemetery mausoleum primarily above ground. After burial services, the casket is carefully interred within the mausoleum by being carried through the doorway, if the mausoleum is a vestibule with windows and doors, or, in the case of a sarcophagus mausoleum with no openings, a crane may temporarily remove the roof or one wall in order to allow the deceased to be placed inside.

Mausoleums can be placed on private property as well as in public or private cemeteries. The placement of mausoleums can affect their appearance and attract the notice of admirers as well as drive the costs up or down. In addition, the size of mausoleums can drive costs, yet larger mausoleums can hold more generations of family members, and over time can be more economical, as well as keep family together.

A burial mausoleum for a single individual can represent honor and respect as a family mausoleum cemetery can represent closeness. It is not uncommon to find a small group of mausoleums for the same family, with an individual burial mausoleum positioned alongside those in a family mausoleum.

The monument, and the placement and size of the mausoleum burial structure, tell tales of the love, appreciation, and devotion to our beloved deceased. Families carefully consider features to arrive at the right mix of statements that convey their love, their loss, and their faith to the world. All mausoleums are monuments of love, standing for future generations to keep the memory of those within fresh and alive in the world.

A Jewish Mausoleum

Most mausoleums place remains above ground inside a mausoleum crypt. Because Scripture and Jewish tradition dictate burial of the deceased in the ground, mausoleums are not commonly used by the Jewish faithful. Instead, *Jewish cemetery monuments* are placed over the earthen grave of the beloved deceased.

While earth burial is traditional, the three movements of Orthodox, Conservative, and Reform Judaism disagree over this sensitive issue. The Orthodox movement of Judaism allows no cremations or interments, but mandates below-ground burial only. They refer to various phrases of the Bible to determine their position. In Genesis 3:19, God says "dust thou art and unto dust thou shalt return." Also, Ecclesiastes 12:7 states "The dust returns to the dust as it was, but the spirit returns to God who gave it." To orthodox Jews, this means that they must be buried in the ground so they may return to dust.

For this reason, the only Jewish mausoleum that Orthodox Jews allow is a mausoleum that extends underground. This is easier when Jewish monuments are built on a hillside, making Jewish cemetery monuments an entrance to the underground.

The Reform movement allows above-ground interment in a Jewish mausoleum based on precedents from the Bible and historic sites such as the Cave of the Patriarchs, Rachel's Tomb, Tomb of Daniel, Tomb of Absalom, Montefiore Synagogue, Ezra's Tomb, and Sassoon Mausoleum. The Conservative movement of Judaism mostly follows the same burial philosophy as the Reform movement, but different synagogues of Conservative Jews consider each proposed mausoleum separately. They make their decision on whether or not it is acceptable according to the Torah, Jewish Law, and precedents relative to the particular family and mausoleum.

One example of varied options for final resting places is the city-operated Boca Raton Cemetery. The cemetery offers the *Boca Raton mausoleum* with indoor and outdoor crypts, niches for cremation urns, and acres of land for traditional burials and monuments. Jewish cemetery monuments may cover an earthen grave or a Jewish monument may be a mausoleum containing caskets and cremation urns. Regardless of the particular rules by which the beloved deceased is put to his or her final rest, a Jewish monument memorializes both life and faith.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church was a Catholic church without a cemetery. To accommodate the needs of the parish, we fashioned a courtyard niche garden into the side of the church. This project required efficient use of space and matching the architecture and brick of the church. The result is a lovely peaceful garden that provides a permanent resting place for many parishioners.

We have a long and distinguished history in mausoleum and columbarium construction. This project for Springhill Cemetery was completed at a time when cremation was not yet a popular option. We were, and remain, at the forefront of the industry. We created a dedicated niche garden, incorporating brick veneer to match the other cemetery architecture.

Hollywood Cemetery is an old historic cemetery that had become short on space. We worked creatively with the site to conform a project to the available space while creating a structure that fits with the rest of the architecture in the cemetery. The result is an impressive dedicated niche interment space.

Beauty

Inside, the large chapel is flooded with light from the large windows, stained glass, and skylights on the raised ceiling. The chapel features a laminated deck and beam ceiling, adding warmth to the room. Several art pieces are built into the mausoleum including large stained glass pieces over the entries, panels, and bronzes. The covered entry has a beautiful stone arch with an arched laminated beam and deck ceiling.

Lakeview Memorial Park is another of our phased construction sites. We have built two, beautiful, enclosed brick-front chapel mausoleums on this site. Each mausoleum has dedicated niche rooms. One room is filled with glass-fronted niches. The mausoleums also contain marble-front niches.

Lakeview Memorial Park exemplifies our site-specific design process. A high crypt retaining wall is a backdrop for one of the mausoleums. This allowed us to maximize site placement and land use as well as overlook the lake.

These two mausoleums also exhibit our commitment to incorporating existing architectural elements at the cemetery into new designs. In this case, both mausoleums use similar materials and entries.

Fred Hunter's Memorial Park

Fred Hunter's Memorial Park is a multiple-phase development project, with new construction to meet additional demand, over 30 years. For this funeral home and cemetery, we developed a large three-core chapel. The usable space was expanded from the chapel crypts by adding garden crypts.

Garden Crypts

These garden crypts are an example of our site-specific design process and commitment. This location abuts a car dealership and trailer park, creating sights and sounds that are not conducive to mindful visits. To minimize both visual clutter and noise, we designed garden crypts seven-high on the property line.

Open Committal Chapels and Niches

Small open committal chapels in the Memorial Park allow for graveside services and visitor's prayers or reflection. This site contains niches in addition to the many crypts. The high property line crypts, chapels, and landscaping contribute to an open and peaceful experience for families.

The Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, New Jersey is a phased construction project. As a cemetery or mausoleum fills, we design and build for the next stage, finding more productive space to maximize business. Our two projects on this site are roughly one quarter mile apart in the cemetery. These stunning spaces include large, sunlit open spaces and substantial artwork.

Open Air Garden Mausoleum

Our first project at Gate of Heaven Cemetery was the garden mausoleum. We built eight levels of crypts, providing the cemetery and their customers an inexpensive alternative to in-ground burial. The open air chapel built with the crypts is ideal for graveside services.

Chapel Mausoleum

The chapel mausoleum is an addition to a pre-existing structure. This elaborate mausoleum is a two-story structure embellished with numerous feature panels and a variety of artwork.
